VOMITING AND DIARRHEA

Vomiting

  • Withhold all food and water for 12-24 hours
  • After not vomiting for 12 hours, offer only small, frequent potions of an electrolyte solution (Pedialyte), Gatorade, or water
  • When no vomiting has occured for 24 hours, begin to offer small frequent (3-6 times daily) portions of a highly digesible diet, such as Prescription Diet I/D, or CNM-EN formula.  In addition, chicken, white rice, cottage cheese, toast, baby food (chicken or beef) .  Cottage cheese and toast are easily digested and work well.
  • Sometimes it helps to mix the food with water for the next 24 hours, making a slurry.
If no vomiting occurs, gradually return your pet to full feed over the next 3-5 days.

Diarrhea

  • No food should be given for 24-48 hours.  Do NOT restrict water intake, unless vomiting is present.
  • Feed small abounts of highly digestible foods Prescription Diet I/D,  CNM-EN formula, chicken, white rice, cottage cheese, toast, chicken or beef baby food.   Begin with 1/3 the amount you would normally feed your pet each day and gradually increase to the normal amount fed over the next several days.
  • The diet should be highly digestible, low in fiber, moderate in fat, and lactose (milk) free
  • Keep your pet's rear free of feces by washing with warm water.
