Vestibular Disease is a disturbance
of the vestibular (balancing and orientation) system. It is a nasty
ear infection and commonly referred to as Wry Neck.
- Symptoms of vestibular disease
are:
- holding the head tilted toward one
side
- eyes moving back and forth very
rapidly
- unsteady and awkward
walking
- When walking, the animal usually
drifts to the side to which the head tilts.
The disease occurs most frequently
during the late summer and fall, and its onset is sudden. The cause
of the disease is unknown, but with appropriate treatment, most
pets recover within 2 to 6 weeks. Since stroke, trauma, middle ear
infections, or brain disorders can cause similar symptoms, various
blood tests and x-rays may be necessary to establish the
diagnosis.
Prompt treatment is essential!
Untreated, the disease can progress to convulsions and death. Pets
with wry neck are usually given antibiotics for the infection and
steroids to reduce the inflammation. Even after the symptoms clear,
you must continue the course of antibiotics as instructed by the
doctor or a reoccurrence is possible.
Important Points in Treatment
1. Medication: give all medication as directed. Call the doctor if
you cannot give the medication.
2. Diet: Feed a good quality food or
prescription diet if the doctor recommends it.
3. Activity: It is essential that
your pet be kept safe while its ability to move is impaired.
Confine it to an area where it will be safe from stairs, open
windows, high ledges, automobiles, and other animals.
- Notify the Doctor if Any of the
Following Occur
- Fainting spells or seizures
- Worsening symptoms
- Symptoms recur after an apparent
recovery
